Josh & Grace's Surprise Marriage Proposal at Roxborough State Park

There are few moments in life as emotional, exciting, and unforgettable as a surprise marriage proposal. Helping couples plan and photograph these moments is one of my favorite parts of being a Colorado proposal photographer. Every proposal is different, every relationship is unique, and finding a location and plan that truly reflects a couple is something I genuinely love being part of.

Josh reached out wanting help planning a surprise proposal for Grace somewhere outdoors near Denver. Since they both love hikingand spending time outside together, Roxborough State Park immediately made sense. I know the park well and suggested a few locations that would work for the mountain views he wanted, the level of surprise he needed, and something approachable enough that Grace and her friend could hike to without too much suspicion.

A Long Distance Surprise Proposal in Colorado

One of the fun twists to this proposal was that Josh and Grace were currently long distance. Grace thought Josh would be arriving later that week in Colorado, but he secretly flew out early to pull off the proposal and add another layer of surprise to the day.

We settled on Lyons Overlook inside Roxborough State Park, one of my favorite locations for a Colorado proposal. The overlook has incredible red rock formations, mountain views, and a quiet atmosphere that feels intimate even on busy days.

One unique challenge about Roxborough State Park is that there is essentially no cell phone service once you're inside the park, so planning and timing are everything. Josh and I coordinated carefully beforehand and hiked to the overlook ahead of time. He arranged for Grace and her friend to arrive at the park roughly 10–15 minutes after us so we would have enough time to reach the overlook from the visitor center and get into position.

The Proposal at Lyons Overlook

Then came the waiting.

For me it felt like an hour. For Josh it probably felt like several days.

Eventually we heard voices approaching along the trail. Grace came around the corner and immediately spotted Josh standing at the overlook. The surprise hit instantly. She had absolutely no idea he had arrived early in Colorado.

I stayed hidden behind some trees nearby while Josh began talking to her. As soon as he started speaking, Grace knew something important was happening. When Josh got down on one knee, she completely lost it — overwhelmed with excitement, bouncing around, laughing, crying, and soaking in the moment.

Of course she said yes.

It was such a joyful and genuine moment to witness.

Celebrating Around Roxborough State Park

After the proposal, we explored a few of my other favorite spots around Roxborough State Park for engagement photos. Grace could barely contain her excitement and kept stopping to tell passing hikers that she had just gotten engaged.

At one point she even paused an entire tour group just to show everyone her ring. It was hilarious and honestly one of the happiest post-proposal reactions I have ever photographed.

Josh and Grace were absolutely glowing the entire evening and it was such a privilege helping bring this moment together for them.

Congratulations Josh and Grace!

Tips for Planning a Surprise Marriage Proposal at a Colorado State Park

Colorado State Parks can make incredible proposal locations thanks to dramatic scenery, hiking trails, and quieter environments compared to more crowded tourist areas. Here are a few important tips if you're planning your own surprise proposal:

  • Plan for Cell Service Limitations: Many parks have little or no service. Coordinate timing and backup plans ahead of time.
  • Choose a Trail That Fits Your Partner: Pick a location that matches your partner's comfort level and personality. The best proposal spots feel natural and authentic.
  • Visit the Location Ahead of Time: Lighting, crowds, trail conditions, and viewpoints can all change throughout the day and seasons.
  • Have a Cover Story: The easiest surprise proposals feel believable and relaxed. Keeping things casual usually helps avoid suspicion.
  • Hire a Photographer Familiar with the Area: Knowing the trails, timing, lighting, and crowd patterns makes the experience significantly smoother.
