A Surprise Rockies Proposal Captured on the Jumbotron

Jason came to me with the idea to propose to his girlfriend Sarah during a Colorado Rockies game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Coors Field in Denver. They both absolutely love the Rockies, and he knew proposing during a game would completely catch her off guard in the best possible way.

We started putting together the plan weeks ahead of time. Jason coordinated with the Colorado Rockies staff to make sure a cameraman would come by during the game and capture the moment for the Jumbotron. The official timing was supposed to happen during the 7th inning stretch.

That also meant I would be sitting right next to them nearly the entire game waiting for the perfect moment without Sarah realizing why I was there. Honestly, those are some of my favorite proposal moments to photograph. Watching someone slowly piece together what is happening is always priceless.

As the 7th inning approached, the anticipation was building. Then Jason did what a lot of people in love do: he jumped the gun a little bit and proposed before the camera crew actually made it over.

Thankfully, I was completely ready and captured the entire proposal as it unfolded naturally. A few moments later, the cameraman arrived and they recreated a bit of the proposal for the stadium cameras and the Jumbotron. Sarah was still absolutely buzzing with excitement and surprise, so the emotions were just as genuine and real.

Honestly, I do not blame him one bit. When you are ready, you are ready.

Everything happened almost exactly according to plan, and best of all, she said yes.

Tips for Planning a Public Marriage Proposal

Before planning a large public proposal, the first and most important thing to think about is whether your partner would actually enjoy that type of attention. Public proposals can be incredibly exciting and memorable, but they are not for everyone.

Some people love the spotlight. Others prefer intimate and private moments. The best proposal ideas are always built around your relationship and your partner's personality rather than what looks biggest online.

How to Tell if a Public Proposal is Right for Them

  • Do they enjoy concerts, sporting events, and crowds?
  • Are they comfortable being the center of attention?
  • Have they ever mentioned liking public proposals?
  • Do they love celebrating milestones with friends and strangers alike?
  • Would they enjoy the story afterward or feel overwhelmed by it?

One of the best ways to gauge this is by casually talking about proposal videos or engagement stories together beforehand. Their reactions can tell you a lot without giving away your own plans.

Another important thing to consider is logistics. Public proposals involve timing, crowds, communication, tickets, parking, security, and often coordination with venue staff. The more moving parts there are, the more important preparation becomes.

How Do You Propose at a Stadium?

Proposing at a stadium or professional sports venue usually requires advance coordination with the team or event staff. Every stadium has different rules and options, but many professional sports organizations offer proposal packages or can help organize scoreboard and Jumbotron moments.

Steps to Planning a Stadium Proposal

  1. Pick the right game or event. Choose a matchup that actually means something to both of you.
  2. Contact the venue or team entertainment department early. Some stadiums book scoreboard messages weeks or months in advance.
  3. Decide whether you want a private proposal in the stands or a full public Jumbotron reveal.
  4. Coordinate exact timing. Halftime, inning breaks, intermissions, and post-game moments all work differently.
  5. Have a backup plan. Crowds, delays, weather, or timing changes can happen at any live event.
  6. Hire a professional proposal photographer to document the real moments before, during, and after the proposal.

A stadium proposal can feel massive and cinematic, but the key is still making it personal. Incorporate inside jokes, favorite players, traditions, jerseys, or meaningful memories connected to the team.

Tips for Proposing at a Professional Sports Event

Arrive Early

Stadiums can be chaotic. Arriving early gives you time to meet with staff, check seating, scout lighting, and make sure everyone involved understands the plan.

Keep the Plan Simple

The more complicated the setup, the more opportunities there are for timing issues. Simplicity almost always works best.

Think About Crowd Reactions

Thousands of people cheering can make the moment unforgettable, but it can also make it hard to communicate. Make sure your proposal is clear and easy to understand in a loud environment.

Choose Seats Carefully

Lighting, camera angles, aisle access, and proximity to entertainment cameras all matter more than most people realize.

Coordinate With a Photographer

Jumbotron footage is fun, but it is not the same as having professional photographs capturing nervous anticipation, reactions, tears, laughter, and all the little moments before and after.

Proposal Ideas for Sports Superfans

If you and your partner are huge sports fans, there are countless creative ways to turn a game day into an unforgettable proposal.

  • Custom jerseys with "Will You Marry Me?" on the back
  • Scoreboard or Jumbotron proposals
  • Proposing during batting practice or warmups
  • Hidden ring boxes inside souvenir helmets
  • Tailgate proposals with friends and family nearby
  • Private suite proposals
  • Mascot-assisted proposals
  • On-field proposal experiences
  • Pregame stadium tour proposals
  • Proposal photos afterward inside the stadium

Sports proposals work best when they feel authentic to your relationship rather than overly staged. The goal is to create a story that feels like you.

Why Hiring a Marriage Proposal Photographer Matters

Hiring a photographer to capture the moments before and during your proposal adds a personal touch that goes far beyond hoping for a few seconds of Jumbotron footage.

Some of the best moments happen before the proposal even begins: nervous hands, anticipation, quick glances, laughter, or the moment someone realizes what is about to happen.

I also have a great knack for contacting venues, coordinators, event staff, and organizers to help secure special access and permissions for these kinds of moments. In most cases, people genuinely love love. They love being part of the beginning of a great story.

You would honestly be surprised what we can make happen with enough planning and creativity.

Whether you are planning a surprise sports proposal, a private mountain engagement, or a full stadium proposal at Coors Field, I would love to help you brainstorm ideas and create something unforgettable.
