Kaitlin and Ben's Powderhorn Mountain Resort Wedding was drop dead gorgeous. It's no secret I love the fall. The air just feels special and the trees look amazing. As I got off the interstate and began driving up the to resort my heart began to sing. No better way to feel prior to photographing someones wedding. On the way I found this giant patch of Bur Oak that was glowing and looked on fire. These trees have so much character and grow super slow.
A fun connection to Powderhorn for Kaitlin and Ben is that Ben was a ski instructor here a while ago. They even got ready in the ski school building. I love that stuff.
Kaitlin and Ben are so much fun and love each other very deeply. They even kicked off their reception doing deadlifts on the porch and invited their guests to do the same. Given they sign a waiver. Hahaha. Pretty cool way to be personal and start your party.
Powderhorn is this smaller ski resort near Palisade and Grand Junction Colorado. Growing up in Montrose myself, I did make it here when I was younger a few times, although when your school gets a super cheap pass to Telluride. You go to Telluride. It's great for beginners and only has 3 lifts. 1 including the "bunny slope." Surprisingly, there are black runs and a few blues. Tickets are a bit cheaper than the mid Colorado resorts so its worth a shot if you're close or to spend a few days but not throw down thousands of dollars on a weekend.
While the reception space and dancefloor could use an update, the ceremony space has a great view and the surrounding area is perfect for photos. There are lots of options for your guests to stay and really make it a weekend. While the resort doesn't have a lot of summer "activities," there is lots of great hiking, mountain biking on the Grand Mesa. It's a great spot to just get away from it all.
The resort has some tiny homes in a circle with firepits that people can rent right up by the lodge and that's where most of the bridal party stayed. They were pretty nice and fun to hang out and watch the stars.
If you are considering a Powderhorn Mountain Resort Wedding I would love to be your photographer.
Nestled on Colorado’s Grand Mesa, Powderhorn Mountain Resort is a hidden gem for couples looking for a scenic, intimate, and unforgettable mountain wedding experience. Especially in the fall, the landscape transforms with glowing golden aspens surrounding the entire resort.
Powderhorn sits on the edge of the Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flat-topped mountain, offering sweeping alpine views in every direction. The setting feels remote and peaceful while still being accessible for guests traveling in from across Colorado and beyond.
One of the most magical aspects of a Powderhorn wedding is fall season. The surrounding slopes and forests are filled with thousands of quaking aspen trees that turn brilliant gold and orange. This creates a naturally cinematic backdrop for ceremonies and portraits without needing heavy decor.
Unlike larger commercial destinations, Powderhorn offers a more relaxed and intimate resort atmosphere. Couples can host weddings with up to 225 guests while still feeling like they’ve taken over an entire mountain retreat.
Guests can stay close to the celebration with on-mountain lodging options, including cozy tiny homes and nearby accommodations on the Grand Mesa. This makes the entire wedding weekend feel like a shared mountain getaway instead of a single-day event.
