Royce & Emily's Romantic Marriage Proposal in Poudre Canyon Colorado
There are certain places that become part of a relationship's story. For Royce and Emily, that place has always been the beautiful Poudre Canyon outside of Fort Collins Colorado. Between drives through the canyon, time spent along the river, and concerts at the iconic Mishawaka Amphitheatre, this area has become one of their favorite places together. So when Royce began planning his marriage proposal, there really was no better location.

Royce reached out to me beforehand to help plan and photograph the surprise proposal. One of the best parts about photographing marriage proposals is helping couples put together something that feels authentic to them rather than overly staged or complicated. For Royce and Emily, the goal was simple: create a meaningful moment in a place they genuinely love.
Their friends came along to help set everything up before they arrived. Flowers and a blanket were carefully arranged near the river while excitement built among everyone involved. It is always fun seeing how invested friends become during a proposal setup. Everyone was genuinely thrilled for the two of them and eager to help make the moment unforgettable.
While the final touches were being put together, I hid behind a mix of trees and rocks nearby waiting for Royce and Emily to walk down the hill toward the river. As soon as Emily spotted the flowers and setup, she clearly knew something was happening, but Royce still managed to completely surprise her in the moment.
Of course, she said yes.
Afterward, we spent time exploring the riverbanks throughout Poudre Canyon creating engagement portraits that felt natural and relaxed. The sound of the river, the canyon walls, and the soft Colorado evening light made everything feel incredibly intimate and personal. It was one of those proposal evenings that perfectly reflected the couple themselves.
Why Poudre Canyon is an Incredible Place for a Marriage Proposal
Poudre Canyon offers some of the best scenery in Northern Colorado for couples looking to plan a surprise engagement. Located just outside Fort Collins, the canyon combines mountain landscapes, flowing rivers, towering rock walls, and countless secluded pull-offs that are perfect for private moments.
The Mishawaka Amphitheatre area is especially popular for couples who love live music, river views, and the laid-back mountain atmosphere. Proposals here can easily turn into a full evening experience with dinner, drinks, hiking, or a concert afterward.
Top 5 Things to Decide On When Planning a Marriage Proposal
- Choose a location that means something to both of you. Whether it is a favorite hiking trail, concert venue, mountain overlook, or river spot, meaningful locations always create stronger memories and more emotional photographs.
- Decide how public or private you want the proposal to feel. Some couples want a quiet, intimate moment while others enjoy including friends and family nearby. Knowing this ahead of time helps shape the entire plan.
- Think about timing and lighting. Sunrise and sunset are usually the best times for proposal photography in Colorado because the lighting is softer, temperatures are better, and popular areas are often less crowded.
- Have a believable reason for being there. One of the biggest parts of planning a surprise proposal is making the situation feel natural so your partner does not immediately suspect what is happening.
- Hire a photographer who can help with logistics and planning. A good proposal photographer does far more than just show up with a camera. They help with timing, location ideas, crowd management, weather backup plans, and creating a smooth experience from beginning to end.

Top 5 Things to Look For in a Colorado Proposal Photographer
- Experience photographing real surprise proposals. Proposal photography moves quickly and there are no second chances. You want someone who understands timing, positioning, and anticipation.
- Knowledge of Colorado locations. Local experience matters. Weather, traffic, hiking conditions, seasonal crowds, and lighting can all dramatically affect the experience.
- Strong communication and planning help. The best proposal photographers help coordinate the entire process rather than simply showing up with a camera.
- Ability to make portraits feel natural. After the proposal, you want engagement photos that feel authentic and relaxed rather than stiff or overly posed.
- Someone who genuinely cares about the experience. The proposal itself matters just as much as the photographs. A photographer who is invested in helping create a memorable experience makes a huge difference.
