This was K & T's first time in Iceland. Since we were there for a few days they wanted to experience a myriad of things including a natural hot springs. This particular hot springs is near the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. An amazing area filled with lots of geothermal activity and a wide variety of nature and terrain.
After wandering the area taking in the massive mountain views, damp wind blown grasses, and the vivid green moss, they stripped down to hop in the hot water as the sun went down. Which takes several hours this time of year so you can really enjoy that sunset time.
Iceland, a Nordic island nation, is defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields. Massive glaciers are protected in Vatnajökull and Snæfellsjökull national parks. Most of the population lives in the capital, Reykjavik, which runs on geothermal power and is home to the National and Saga museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history.
The landscape is incredible and so varied. You can visit a massive canyon, drive 20 minutes for some insane waterfalls, then another 20 for lava fields. It is ever evolving and surreal: All within close proximity. It just keeps changing and it makes for some really amazing photos. Some killer portraits, but also lots of fun candids adventuring around.
I have been to Iceland several times now, and I am constantly marking spots while I am there, and places to visit when I am not. It's just somthing that I do. I spend a lot of time actively scouting locations on the internet, google maps and google earth. Its one of the best ways to really experience and place and see what it has to offer, and the best times to visit during the day and during the year.
Photo sessions with me are one part deep research and we pick some locations together and devise a good iterary and route. BUT Here's the key - While we are driving and wandering around you never know what Iceland is going to throw at you, we may come across a location I had no idea existed, the light could be AMAZING in that moment, or there might be some wild horses or elves homes to visit. Those are the things that just happen and you have to jump on them in the moment. I feel like it makes for a more dynamic trip and story of your adventures. We had this and this planned, but all of a sudden... or we discovered this tiny hut selling crepes that were incredible and hit the perfect spot after getting soaked by a waterfall. You just never know what will happen and you have to be open to that and lean into those moments too.
Check out my map with all my saved pinned spots. I need to get to the northside soon.
