How to Get Married at Sunrise Amphitheater in Boulder, Colorado

A Mountain Wedding With Incredible Views Just Minutes From Boulder

If you're dreaming about getting married somewhere surrounded by Colorado's natural beauty, with mountain views, fresh air, and a little less of the traditional wedding fuss, Sunrise Amphitheater on Flagstaff Mountain might be exactly what you're looking for.

Located just a few miles above downtown Boulder, Sunrise Amphitheater offers one of the most convenient ways to have an outdoor mountain wedding in Colorado. You get a beautiful stone amphitheater, views overlooking Boulder and the surrounding foothills, and a setting that feels worlds away from town without actually being very far from restaurants, hotels, and other wedding-day conveniences.

I've photographed weddings at Sunrise Amphitheater, and having spent so much time exploring and photographing around Flagstaff Mountain, I can tell you there's a lot more to this location than just showing up, saying your vows, and heading back down the mountain.

There are some important things to know before booking, especially when it comes to reservations, parking, bathrooms, and the rules about what you can bring.

Here's everything you need to know about getting married at Sunrise Amphitheater, including how to reserve the venue, what your rental includes, how many guests you can invite, where everyone can stay, and some of my personal recommendations for making the most of your wedding day.

5 Reasons to Get Married at Sunrise Amphitheater

1. Incredible Mountain and Boulder Views

One of the biggest reasons couples choose Sunrise Amphitheater is the setting. Located near the summit of Flagstaff Mountain, the venue offers beautiful views of Boulder and the surrounding foothills.

The combination of historic stone architecture, pine trees, mountain scenery, and open skies makes this a uniquely Colorado wedding location.

You don't have to hike miles into the mountains to find a beautiful outdoor ceremony location. You can drive right up Flagstaff Mountain and walk a short distance to the amphitheater.

2. A Beautiful Location for Small Weddings and Elopements

Not every wedding needs 150 guests, a ballroom, and a five-hour reception.

Sunrise Amphitheater is especially appealing for couples who want something more personal. Whether you're getting married with just the two of you, bringing along immediate family, or inviting a few dozen friends, the setting feels intimate without sacrificing the scenery.

The natural stone seating also creates a built-in ceremony space, meaning you don't have to bring in an elaborate seating arrangement.

3. Close to Downtown Boulder

One of the best things about Sunrise Amphitheater is how close it is to everything else.

You're only a short drive from downtown Boulder, Pearl Street, restaurants, hotels, and vacation rentals.

This makes it much easier to plan a wedding weekend where guests can stay in town, explore Boulder, enjoy a nice dinner, and still experience a mountain wedding.

It's also a great option for couples traveling from out of state who want a Colorado mountain wedding without asking everyone to drive several hours into the mountains.

4. Historic Colorado Architecture

Sunrise Amphitheater was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933-1934.

The rustic stone construction, circular gathering area, small stage, and tiered seating give the venue a distinctive historic character.

I love locations that have some personality and history rather than looking like every other wedding venue. Sunrise Amphitheater has that in spades.

The stonework also photographs beautifully and provides an interesting contrast to the natural landscape.

5. You Can Spend the Rest of Your Wedding Day Exploring Colorado

One of the biggest advantages of getting married on Flagstaff Mountain is that you're surrounded by other beautiful places to explore.

You can have your ceremony at Sunrise Amphitheater and then spend time taking portraits at nearby overlooks, exploring the mountain, or heading into Boulder for dinner.

A wedding doesn't have to be a single event at a single location.

Personally, I love helping couples build a wedding day around the things they enjoy doing together. Maybe that's exploring a new trail, watching the sunset, enjoying a great dinner, or finding a quiet place to take in the views.

How to Get a Wedding Permit at Sunrise Amphitheater

The first thing you need to know is that Sunrise Amphitheater is managed by the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP).

You cannot simply show up with an officiant, your family, and a photographer and expect to hold your ceremony. You need to reserve the facility in advance and obtain a facility use permit.

The good news is that the process is relatively straightforward.

Step 1: Check Available Dates

Visit the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks shelter rental website:

City of Boulder – OSMP Shelter Rentals

From there, you can review the facility information, rules, available reservation blocks, and online reservation calendar.

Sunrise Amphitheater is available for reservations seasonally, generally May 1 through October 30.

The facility is closed for reservations from October 31 through April 30. Flagstaff Summit Road is also closed to vehicles during this winter period.

You can reserve a facility up to two years in advance, so I recommend looking early if you have a specific wedding date in mind.

Step 2: Choose Your Reservation Time

Sunrise Amphitheater offers several reservation options.

The early morning reservations are particularly appealing for couples who want a sunrise wedding.

  • 6:00 AM – 7:00 AM
  • 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM
  • 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM
  • 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
  • 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
  • 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

The early morning options are one-hour reservations. The remaining options are three-hour reservations.

Remember that your reservation time includes setup and cleanup. If you want to decorate, have a ceremony, and take family photos, account for all of that when choosing your time block.

Step 3: Pay the Reservation Fee

The current Sunrise Amphitheater rental fees are:

Reservation Length Boulder City Resident Non-Resident
One hour $100 $150
Three hours $300 $400

A 6% online service charge is added to online transactions.

Resident pricing applies to households located within Boulder city limits. Living somewhere in Boulder County does not automatically qualify you for resident pricing.

Once you complete your reservation and payment, you'll receive your facility use permit.

Step 4: Read and Follow the Facility Rules

Before completing your reservation, make sure you understand the rules and restrictions.

There are some things you can bring to make your ceremony personal, but there are also restrictions designed to protect the natural environment and preserve the experience for other visitors.

Step 5: Arrange an Alcohol Permit if Needed

If you plan to serve alcohol at your wedding, you need an additional City of Boulder alcohol permit.

The alcohol permit costs $25 and must be associated with a confirmed facility reservation.

Only beer and wine are permitted under this facility alcohol permit. Hard liquor is not included.

The applicant must be at least 21 years old, and the alcohol permit must be available during the event.

Glass bottles and containers are prohibited, so plan to use appropriate non-glass serving containers.

See the City's facility rental information for the complete alcohol regulations.

What Does the Sunrise Amphitheater Wedding Permit Include?

This is an important distinction: you're renting the use of a public outdoor facility for a designated period of time. You're not renting a traditional wedding venue with staff, catering, and event services.

Here's what you get with your reservation.

What IS Included

  • Exclusive reservation of the designated Sunrise Amphitheater facility for your approved time block.
  • Use of the circular stone ceremony area.
  • Built-in tiered stone amphitheater seating.
  • The small stone stage area.
  • Access to the designated facility during your reservation.
  • Access to the nearby public parking areas, subject to availability.
  • Access to the nearby pit-latrine restroom facilities.

Your reservation allows you to hold your wedding ceremony in this designated space without having to compete with other groups trying to reserve the same facility during your time block.

However, the surrounding Flagstaff Mountain property remains public land.

What IS NOT Included

This is where couples sometimes get caught off guard.

Your reservation does not include:

  • Wedding planner or day-of coordinator.
  • Officiant or marriage license.
  • Photographer or videographer.
  • Flowers, decorations, or an arch.
  • Chairs or tables.
  • Electricity or running water.
  • Indoor facilities or a bridal preparation room.
  • Heating, cooling, or weather protection.
  • Sound equipment or a microphone system.
  • Catering or food service.
  • Alcohol service or an alcohol permit.
  • Reserved or guaranteed parking spaces.
  • Trash removal.
  • Staff to help set up or clean up.

You'll need to arrange those additional services yourself, where permitted.

The City does not provide event support, so make sure someone in your wedding party or planning team is responsible for setup and cleanup.

Sunrise Amphitheater Wedding Rules and Restrictions

The City of Boulder has several rules designed to protect Flagstaff Mountain and the surrounding Open Space and Mountain Parks property.

Here are the most important restrictions to know when planning your ceremony.

Decorations and Structures

  • Tents, shade tents, canopies, nets, and freestanding arches are prohibited.
  • Arches used during religious ceremonies must be held up by participants for the entire time they're being used.
  • No signs, balloons, or decorations may be attached to trees, buildings, signs, or other park property.
  • Flower petals, rice, confetti, birdseed, glitter, and other loose materials are prohibited.
  • No releasing balloons or animals.

You can still create a beautiful ceremony without bringing a lot of decorations. I actually think the natural stone architecture and surrounding landscape provide plenty of visual interest.

Food and Beverages

  • No glass containers are allowed on OSMP property, including champagne bottles and wine glasses.
  • Alcohol requires a separate $25 alcohol permit.
  • Only beer and wine are permitted under that alcohol permit.
  • Food trucks and large commercial vehicles are prohibited.
  • All trash must be removed by your group.

Music

Battery-operated portable music players and acoustic music are permitted.

Live bands and amplified sound are restricted, and there is no electricity available.

If you're planning on having a musician, make sure they understand the limitations before booking.

Fire and Open Flames

Fires, candles, open flames, smoke-producing devices, and fuel-powered equipment are prohibited.

That means no unity candles, propane heaters, camp stoves, generators, or warming equipment.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed at Sunrise Amphitheater.

Dogs must either remain on a leash or be under voice and sight control with a qualified guardian participating in the City's Voice and Sight Control Program.

If your dog is part of your family, this is a great opportunity to include them in your wedding!

Photography and Drones

Drones are prohibited throughout OSMP property.

Also, if you're hiring a professional photographer, make sure they understand the City's commercial photography requirements.

The facility reservation allows commercial photography within the designated facility. Photography outside the reserved facility on other OSMP property is subject to separate commercial use permit requirements.

This is an important distinction if you plan to take portraits elsewhere on Flagstaff Mountain.

How Many Guests Can You Have at Sunrise Amphitheater?

Sunrise Amphitheater has a maximum capacity of 100 people.

That number includes everyone attending the event, not just the people sitting in the audience.

There is also a combined attendance limit of 100 people across the Flagstaff Summit facilities during any one reservation time block.

This means you should confirm availability for your guest count when making your reservation.

Is Sunrise Amphitheater Good for a Small Wedding?

Absolutely!

In fact, I think this location is particularly well suited to smaller weddings.

Here's how I would think about different wedding sizes:

  • Just the two of you: Perfect for an intimate elopement. You can exchange vows on the stage, enjoy the scenery, and spend the rest of the day exploring Boulder and Flagstaff Mountain.
  • 2–15 guests: A wonderful size for a small ceremony with immediate family and close friends. It feels personal and relaxed.
  • 15–30 guests: Still a very comfortable size for the amphitheater. You have enough people to create a meaningful celebration without making the space feel crowded.
  • 30–50 guests: A great option for couples who want a traditional ceremony experience with a larger group of family and friends.
  • 50–100 guests: Possible within the official capacity, but parking and guest logistics become much more important.

My personal recommendation would be to keep your guest list somewhere between 2 and 40 people if you want a more intimate mountain wedding experience.

You can certainly invite more people, but remember that the amphitheater is an outdoor public facility, not a private wedding estate with a dedicated parking lot and event staff.

The maximum allowable attendance is 100 people. Do not exceed the number approved on your facility permit.

Parking at Sunrise Amphitheater: What You Need to Know

This is one of the biggest logistical considerations when planning a wedding at Sunrise Amphitheater.

There is parking available on Flagstaff Mountain, but it is limited and is not included or guaranteed with your wedding reservation.

The City lists the following parking spaces around the summit:

Parking Area Regular Spaces ADA Spaces
Amphitheater 10 3
Main Summit Lot 28 1
Nature Center 3 1
Stone/Wood Shelter 3 1
Other nearby summit lots Additional spaces Varies

There are additional parking areas along Flagstaff Road, but don't assume those spaces will be available when your guests arrive.

Do You Have to Pay for Parking?

Vehicles that are not registered in Boulder County must display a valid daily or annual parking permit.

The daily parking permit is currently $5 per vehicle.

You can purchase parking permits through:

  • The ParkMobile app using Zone 24700.
  • Self-service parking stations using cash or check.
  • The City of Boulder administrative office in advance by appointment.

Parking permits do not guarantee a parking space.

My Personal Parking Tips

1. Encourage everyone to carpool.

Don't let every guest drive their own vehicle. With limited parking, carpooling is one of the easiest ways to avoid problems.

2. Give guests directions in advance.

Flagstaff Road is winding, and cell service can be unreliable in certain areas. Send your guests directions and parking information before the wedding.

3. Tell everyone to arrive early.

I recommend asking guests to arrive at least 30 minutes before the ceremony. This gives everyone time to drive up the mountain, find a parking spot, and walk to the amphitheater.

4. Consider transportation for larger weddings.

For larger guest counts, arrange carpools or smaller passenger vehicles. Don't assume a large shuttle bus can park near the venue. There are no designated shuttle bus spaces, and parking for oversized vehicles cannot be guaranteed.

5. Think about accessibility.

The amphitheater has a wheelchair-accessible path to the seating area. The path is approximately 200 feet long, six feet wide, and has a 7–8% grade.

If you need wheelchair access to the stage, contact OSMP in advance to arrange a ramp.

Bathrooms at Sunrise Amphitheater: A Few Things to Know

Let's talk about something that isn't particularly glamorous but is important when planning an outdoor mountain wedding.

The bathrooms.

Sunrise Amphitheater has pit-latrine restrooms, sometimes referred to as vault toilets.

These are basic outdoor restroom facilities. They do not have running water, electricity, or the amenities of a traditional indoor bathroom.

There are no bridal suites, changing rooms, or indoor spaces to getting ready in. I have had couples bring an ex up tent to get ready in the parking lot with some success. Don't forget about wind. Ugghhh. I hate wind.

My Tips

  • Have guests use the restroom before driving up the mountain if they're uncomfortable with outdoor facilities.
  • Bring hand sanitizer and a small package of tissues.
  • Don't plan on doing extensive hair and makeup touch-ups in the bathrooms.
  • If you're wearing a wedding dress, use the restroom before putting it on whenever possible.
  • Consider getting ready at a nearby hotel or vacation rental rather than at the amphitheater.

If you have older family members or guests with mobility concerns, let them know about the restroom situation ahead of time.

It's much better to have everyone prepared than to surprise them on the wedding day!

When Is the Best Time of Year to Get Married at Sunrise Amphitheater?

Sunrise Amphitheater is generally available for weddings between May and October.

Each season offers something a little different.

May and June: Spring Mountain Weddings

Spring is a beautiful time to get married around Boulder.

The foothills begin turning green, wildflowers start appearing, and temperatures are generally pleasant.

However, Colorado spring weather can be unpredictable. Snowstorms are still possible, particularly at higher elevations.

Bring layers and have a backup plan for changing weather.

July and August: Summer Weddings

Summer offers long days, warm temperatures, and plenty of opportunities to explore Flagstaff Mountain.

This is a great time for evening ceremonies, especially if you want to enjoy the changing light as the sun gets lower.

Afternoon thunderstorms are common in Colorado during summer, so I generally recommend scheduling outdoor ceremonies earlier in the day or later in the evening.

September and October: Fall Weddings

Fall is one of my favorite times of year to photograph weddings in Colorado.

The changing colors, cooler temperatures, and beautiful evening light make September and October especially appealing.

Flagstaff Mountain has some wonderful fall color, although the timing varies from year to year.

Keep in mind that the venue closes for reservations after October 30.

What About a Sunrise Wedding?

Despite the name, Sunrise Amphitheater isn't just for sunrise weddings!

However, an early morning ceremony can be an incredible experience.

The early morning reservation blocqks begin at 6:00 AM, allowing couples to plan a ceremony around sunrise depending on the time of year.

You get cooler temperatures, beautiful morning light, and a quieter atmosphere.

Just remember that sunrise times change throughout the year, so plan your ceremony time around the actual sunrise rather than assuming it will always happen at 6:00 AM.

Nearby Places to Stay: Hotels, Airbnb and VRBO Rentals

One of the advantages of getting married at Sunrise Amphitheater is that there are plenty of places for you and your guests to stay nearby.

Downtown Boulder is only a short drive down the mountain, making it a convenient home base for your wedding weekend.

Here are a few places worth considering.

Hotels in Boulder

1. St Julien Hotel & Spa

Located in downtown Boulder, St Julien is a beautiful upscale hotel with mountain views, a spa, a pool, and convenient access to Pearl Street.

This is a great option for couples who want a more luxurious wedding weekend.

It's also a convenient place to get ready before heading up Flagstaff Mountain.

2. Hotel Boulderado

If you enjoy historic properties, Hotel Boulderado is a classic Boulder landmark.

The hotel opened in 1909 and features beautiful historic architecture, a central downtown location, and easy access to restaurants and shops.

3. Foot of the Mountain Motel

For something a little more rustic and outdoorsy, this historic cabin-style motel is located near Boulder Creek and Boulder Canyon.

It's a nice option for guests who enjoy a mountain-town atmosphere rather than a traditional hotel.

4. Basecamp Boulder

An outdoorsy boutique hotel with a fun atmosphere and convenient access to downtown Boulder.

A good option for guests who want a casual place to stay while exploring Colorado.

Airbnb and VRBO Vacation Rentals

If you're planning a smaller wedding or want to spend more time with family and friends, renting an entire house or mountain property can be a great option.

Here are some places and areas worth investigating:

Mountain homes in Sunshine Canyon and the Flagstaff area

These properties can provide a more secluded mountain experience while still being relatively close to downtown Boulder.

Look for homes with outdoor patios, mountain views, and enough bedrooms for your group.

Downtown Boulder vacation homes

If convenience is more important than seclusion, look for homes near Pearl Street or west Boulder.

These are great for couples who want to walk to restaurants and shops while remaining close to Flagstaff Mountain.

Airbnb Boulder, Colorado: Browse Boulder Airbnb rentals

VRBO Boulder, Colorado: Browse Boulder VRBO rentals

A quick note about vacation rentals: Always confirm the property's occupancy limits, parking arrangements, and rules about gatherings. A rental that sleeps ten people does not necessarily allow ten additional wedding guests to visit.

Best Restaurants Near Sunrise Amphitheater for Your Wedding Dinner

After exchanging vows on the mountain, you'll probably want to celebrate with a great meal.

Fortunately, Boulder has an excellent restaurant scene, with everything from upscale fine dining to more relaxed neighborhood restaurants.

Here are some of my recommendations for couples looking to reserve a table for their wedding dinner.

1. Flagstaff House

If you want to stay on the mountain for dinner, Flagstaff House is an excellent option.

Located along Flagstaff Road, this upscale restaurant is known for its incredible views overlooking Boulder, its extensive wine selection, and its multi-course dining experience.

It's particularly well suited for couples looking to celebrate with a memorable dinner after their ceremony.

Reservations are required for full dinner service, so plan ahead.

2. Corrida

Located in downtown Boulder, Corrida is a Spanish-inspired steakhouse with a beautiful rooftop setting.

The restaurant focuses on Spanish cuisine, high-quality beef, and an excellent wine program.

It's a great option for a romantic dinner or a small wedding celebration with family and friends.

3. OAK at Fourteenth

A locally owned restaurant on Pearl Street featuring seasonal American cuisine and a lively atmosphere.

OAK is a nice choice if you want something upscale but not overly formal.

They also offer family-style dining arrangements for certain larger groups, making it worth contacting them if you're planning a small reception dinner.

4. Frasca Food and Wine

For couples who want an especially memorable dining experience, Frasca is one of Boulder's most celebrated restaurants.

The restaurant specializes in cuisine inspired by the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy.

Expect excellent food, an extensive wine program, and a more refined dining experience.

This is a wonderful option for a special occasion dinner.

5. The Greenbriar Inn

Located north of Boulder, The Greenbriar Inn offers a beautiful setting with historic character and a more traditional fine-dining atmosphere.

It's a nice choice if you want to get away from downtown and enjoy dinner surrounded by the Colorado foothills.

The property also has a romantic atmosphere that makes it particularly appealing for wedding celebrations.

6. Chautauqua Dining Hall

Located at the base of the Flatirons, the Chautauqua Dining Hall offers a classic Boulder dining experience.

The historic setting and beautiful mountain surroundings make this a great choice for couples who want to keep their wedding celebration connected to the outdoors.

It's particularly appealing for a relaxed dinner with family and friends.

7. Bramble & Hare

A smaller farm-to-table restaurant in downtown Boulder featuring seasonal ingredients and a more intimate dining atmosphere.

This is a great choice for couples who appreciate locally sourced food and a cozy restaurant setting.

My Restaurant Reservation Advice

If you're planning a wedding dinner with more than six or eight people, contact the restaurant directly rather than relying on the standard online reservation system.

Ask about:

  • Private dining or semi-private seating.
  • Preselected menus for larger groups.
  • Deposits and cancellation policies.
  • Dietary restrictions and menu options.
  • Whether you can bring a wedding cake or dessert.
  • How much time the restaurant allows for your reservation.

For popular restaurants like Flagstaff House, Corrida, and Frasca, I recommend making reservations well in advance.

My Personal Tips for Photographing
a Wedding at Sunrise Amphitheater

I've photographed weddings at Sunrise Amphitheater, and one of the things I love about this location is how much variety you can get without traveling very far.

The amphitheater itself is beautiful, but I wouldn't necessarily limit your wedding photographs to the ceremony location.

Flagstaff Mountain has several incredible places to explore, and knowing where to go, when to go, and how the light changes throughout the day makes a big difference.

Here are a few things I'd recommend.

1. Plan Time for Portraits Away From the Amphitheater

The ceremony location is only part of the experience.

There are several overlooks and scenic areas along Flagstaff Road that provide opportunities for beautiful wedding portraits.

Depending on the weather, lighting, and time of day, we can explore some of these locations before or after the ceremony.

Lost Gulch Overlook is one of the most recognizable spots on Flagstaff Mountain.

It offers expansive views of the surrounding mountains and is particularly beautiful in the right light.

However, it's a popular public overlook, so I like to be thoughtful about timing and crowds.

2. Pay Attention to the Light

Colorado has some incredible natural light, but the timing of your ceremony can make a big difference.

Morning light, afternoon sun, and evening light all create different looks.

The amphitheater has open exposure, which means direct sunlight can be fairly harsh during certain parts of the day.

If beautiful photographs are important to you, let's talk about the timing of your ceremony and portraits before you book your reservation.

3. Be Prepared for Colorado Weather

Mountain weather can change quickly.

Even when it's sunny in downtown Boulder, conditions on Flagstaff Mountain can be different.

Bring layers, have a little flexibility in your schedule, and don't assume that a forecast for Boulder will perfectly predict the weather at the summit.

The good news is that some of my favorite photographs happen when the weather doesn't cooperate perfectly.

Clouds, changing light, and a little wind can create some incredible opportunities.

4. Don't Feel Like You Need to Follow a Traditional Wedding Timeline

One of the biggest benefits of getting married at Sunrise Amphitheater is that you can make the day your own.

You don't need to spend hours following a traditional wedding schedule.

Maybe you want a short ceremony, some beautiful portraits, and a fantastic dinner.

Maybe you want to explore the mountain, spend time with your family, and enjoy a slower-paced afternoon.

There isn't a right or wrong way to do it.

My job is to help you figure out what makes the most sense for the two of you and build a timeline that allows you to enjoy the experience rather than constantly watching the clock.

Looking for a Sunrise Amphitheater Wedding Photographer?

If you've made it this far, you're probably considering Sunrise Amphitheater for your wedding.

I'd love to help you make it happen.

I'm Dylan Burr, a Colorado wedding and elopement photographer. I grew up in Colorado, spend an unreasonable amount of time exploring the outdoors, and have photographed weddings throughout the state.

I know Flagstaff Mountain well, including the little details that can make a big difference when planning a wedding here.

I can help you figure out the best time for your ceremony, where to take portraits, how to work around changing mountain weather, and how to put together a timeline that actually makes sense.

More importantly, I want your wedding to feel like the two of you.

Not a copy of somebody else's Pinterest board. Not a checklist of traditions you feel obligated to follow.

If you want to get married on a mountain, spend time exploring somewhere beautiful, include your favorite people, or just have a meaningful experience together, let's make that happen.

I'm outgoing, a little goofy, and probably going to make you laugh more than once during your photographs. I want you to feel like you're hanging out with an old friend who happens to know a ridiculous amount about Colorado and has a camera.

And because I know how important your photographs are, I typically deliver finished wedding galleries in 7–10 days.
