Romantic Mountain Marriage Proposal in Estes Park, Colorado
Jacob first contacted me as he and AJ were planning on visiting Colorado and thought that Estes Park would be a perfect spot for him to propose to AJ. He just didn't know quite where. Thankfully, that's where I am a big help. Not only do I think I consider it part of a photographers job to find good photo spots that work for them, but also a good variety for my couples. I need a spot that has good light, but I want to present a location that is what Jacob has in mind for this big moment in their lives.
It's also my nature to just wander around and I get entranced by nature and light. I photograph a lot in and around Estes Park but I don't always want to use the same spots over and over. Its get repetitive and not unique for my clients. It starts feeling like a rinse and repeat job and not the experience I try to provide.
Quite a bit of coordination goes into a marriage proposal. Especially if I need to stay undetected and only be revealed after the big moment. Jacob was great and had a lot of his own wishes which helps me a lot for locations. Then it comes down to the timing and I will make maps and send some sneaky texts as to what car they're in etc. This gets really intetesting when the final spot is outside cell service.
How to Plan a Marriage Proposal?
- 1. Know Your Partner
Before anything else, consider what your partner would love. Do they prefer private moments or grand gestures? Would they enjoy an audience or something more intimate? Tailor the proposal to their personality, not just your own.
- 2. Choose the Right Location
Pick a place that’s meaningful — whether it’s a favorite hiking spot, the site of your first date, or a scenic destination like Estes Park. Think about the setting: romantic, quiet, scenic, or celebratory?
- 3. Decide on the Ring
If you're going the traditional route, make sure you’ve picked a ring that matches their style. Some partners may want to be involved in the ring selection — in that case, consider proposing with a placeholder ring and shopping together afterward.
- 4. Make It Personal
Add sentimental touches: write a heartfelt speech, include a favorite song, or incorporate an inside joke or meaningful memory. The more personal it feels, the more impactful the moment will be.
- 5. Plan the Details
Timing: Consider lighting, weather, and time of day. Sunset is a popular choice for a reason!
Photography/Videography: Hire a professional or ask a friend to capture the moment.
Back-Up Plan: Especially for outdoor or surprise proposals, have a Plan B in case of weather or delays.
- 6. Practice What You’ll Say
You don’t need a script, but think through the main things you want to say. Speak from the heart — sincerity matters more than perfection.
- 7. Celebrate Afterwards
Plan a celebration, whether it's dinner, a family gathering, or a weekend getaway. Let the excitement carry on beyond the proposal itself.
- 8. Keep It a Surprise (if that’s important)
If your partner loves surprises, be mindful of how you ask others for help or book services — make sure they’re discreet and you’re not leaving clues behind!
